In a first day in office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” America's largest city, declaring “a new era” and an bold commencement to his term.

An Unprecedented Leader

The young figure, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor born in Africa. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his address with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
