The network's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Major Renewal for Two More Seasons.

In October of last year, the late-night programming block welcomed back its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the network unveiled a brand-new animated series with a distinctly unique tone. Haha, You Clowns was gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. In an era often characterized by dark humor, this show's sincerity resonated deeply and propelled it a surprise hit.

A Major Commitment

In mid-December, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to develop the world of the Campbell family. The show centers on three respectful teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.

"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer."

A President's Endorsement

The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and supported its peculiarly charming sensibility.

"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something surprisingly comfy about following this charming family navigate their everyday routines.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa shared his hope to evolve comedy past its prevailing sarcastic tone. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.

“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we keep returning to,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

Future Seasons

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa may well be part of that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal promises audiences a little more time to experience the gentle humor of the endearing Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The entire series is available for streaming on HBO Max.
