Taliban Utilized Discarded UK Gear to Find Local Nationals Who Worked With Allied Forces, Inquiry Is Told
An informant has disclosed a parliamentary probe that the UK left behind classified equipment permitting the Taliban to locate Afghans that had served with western forces.
Information Leak Puts Numerous in Danger
The source, called Person A, explained that individuals impacted by the information breach were told to change residences and switch their phone numbers to protect themselves from militant forces.
MPs are looking into the Conservative government's handling of a serious breach of personal details affecting nearly 19,000 Afghans who had asked to relocate to the United Kingdom to escape militant rule.
The Information Breach Occurred
A spreadsheet with private information, comprising names, phone numbers and in some cases family information, was mistakenly released by an official employed at special operations center in early 2022.
The incident became known in late 2023, when details of several individuals who had applied to move to Britain surfaced on social media.
Taliban Capabilities
It appears there is a misunderstanding that the Taliban are without similar capabilities that allied forces use,” she told MPs.
Technology was deserted in Afghanistan; they have it. If they have your phone number, they are able to track your exact position. That's precisely what intelligence groups achieved.”
Under inquiry about whether the Taliban owned sophisticated technology, Person A confirmed: “They've got everything.”
Impact of the Information Leak
Initial findings provided to the inquiry suggested that no fewer than forty-nine kin and co-workers of Afghans affected by the breach had been murdered.
A gag order about the breach was enacted in last year and prevented all details concerning it from public disclosure until recently.
Security Recommendations
Due to legal constraints, the whistleblower and the non-governmental organization associated with informed affected households they were assisting that they had “concerns that somebody's phone had been intercepted”.
“We recommended that they relocate when possible and altered their mobile numbers. That constituted the primary information that, if authorities acquired such data, would cause their location being found,” Person A explained.
Disputed Conclusions
The whistleblower argued that an official review carried out by an ex-government employee had been mistaken to determine that the acquisition of the records by the Taliban was “minimally impact current risk levels”.
“The crucial point is that these individuals are in hiding from the authorities; they live secretly. Everything boils down to their previous employment.”
The source explained disturbing violence suffered by at-risk Afghans, including electric shock torture, interrogation techniques, and physical abuse.
“Instances include four-year-old children who have had their arms broken to try to get households to reveal locations,” she testified.
