Israelis have assembled across the country to remember two years since the Hamas-conducted assault on October 7th, 2023, as negotiations proceeded in the neighboring country over a resolution to the hostilities in Gaza.

The incident led to more than 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others captured away to Gaza as captives. It was the most most fatal day for the Jewish community since the Second World War.

Israel answered by launching a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the area's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its figures are considered trustworthy by the UN and other world agencies.

"Our aggressive adversaries have caused great damage, but they have not defeated us," the prime minister remarked on Tuesday.

He also pledged to "realize all the aims of the war: the release of all the abducted, the elimination of the Hamas government and the guarantee that Gaza will never again present a risk to Israel".

Memorial Ceremonies Across Israel

The national leadership rescheduled state memorials until mid-October - after the completion of the festive season - but ceremonies still took place throughout the country on that day.

A commemorative event for the loved ones of Israelis who died in the Hamas assault was held in the coastal city. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was aired throughout Israeli broadcast stations.

A period earlier, a silent tribute was respected throughout the country.

Negotiation Discussions in Egypt

Meanwhile, both sides' negotiating teams convened in the Egyptian tourist destination of the Egyptian city for a continuing round of mediated discussions to discuss the conditions of the agreement.

A prominent delegate familiar with the negotiations said that an late session of indirect talks commenced at 19:00 Cairo time.

The official explained the day's discussions ended without concrete outcomes, due to disagreements over the recommended Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to guarantee Israel does not restart hostilities after the first phase of the deal.

He commented that the discussions are "challenging and have yet to produce any real breakthrough," but noted that mediators are striving to narrow the disparities between the two sides.

Critical Issues in Discussions

  • An enduring halt to fighting
  • The exchange of the prisoners still held by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Plans for assistance deliveries
  • After-conflict governance of the area

Public Sentiment

In Tel Aviv's memorial area earlier, 29-year-old Hagar - whose family member lived through the assault on the outdoor event, where many attendees were lost their lives and many more were taken hostage by Hamas gunmen - shared: "Nowhere feels like home anymore and until all the hostages are released no one will feel safe."

"Once we see all home returned, we can breathe again. Then we can start to rebuild," she added.

In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence in the capital, people gathered to show their solidarity for the relatives of the hostages. Israel says nearly fifty remain in detention in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be living.

Demonstrator Atalia Regev remarked: "We need do whatever arrangement needed for the abducted to return. But we really want guarantees that we will be secure."

Surveys now consistently show that approximately 70% of the population want the war to end in as payment for the release of the abducted.

Palestinian Conditions

At the location of Nova festival, those paying respects assembled to remember the victims.

From there, the sound of aerial bombardments and artillery could be heard just a short distance away in Gaza, where local people reported the severe Israeli shelling continued.

In Gaza City, bombardments were documented in the morning of Tuesday in the western Tal al-Hawa, sector and zone areas and in the eastern neighbourhood of that sector, as well the camp to the northwestern area.

"When the night falls, the fear arrives with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a local woman, whose young son was killed by an Israeli bombing previously, described.

"We are afraid of the air strikes. Throughout the evening we are sleeping together, clinging, particularly my little child who puts his face on me all night."

"Every second we look at the updates to see the situation. And I'm worried that this halt will not be achieved and that the fighting will come back to us."

Medical Emergency

The medical facility in Gaza City said it had received the bodies of half dozen people by the afternoon, including a trio killed in an Israeli attack in the southern area.

Nasser hospital in the southern urban center of Khan Younis reported two more victims had been brought there. One of them was died by Israeli forces while seeking help to the southern area, medical staff reported.

Gaza's health ministry reported a significant number of the {territ
