In excess of 60,000 Escape Sudan's City After Takeover by Rapid Support Forces Paramilitary Group, United Nations Reports

As stated by the UN refugee agency, in excess of 60,000 people have escaped the Sudanese city of el-Fasher, which was captured by the militia RSF recently.

There have been summary killings and atrocities as paramilitary forces took control of the city after an year-and-a-half siege marked by famine and heavy bombardment.

The movement of those fleeing the violence towards the town of Tawila, about 80km (50 miles) to the west of el-Fasher, had grown in the recent days, according to United Nations refugee agency representative.

Refugees were describing shocking tales of abuses, featuring sexual violence, and the agency was struggling to secure enough housing and supplies for them.

Each child was affected by nutritional deficiencies, she commented.

Calculations indicate that over 150,000 residents are presently unable to leave in el-Fasher, which had been the military's final bastion in the western region of Darfur.

The RSF has rejected broad allegations that the killings in el-Fasher are ethnically motivated and follow a trend of the Arab paramilitaries targeting ethnic minorities.

Yet the paramilitary group has custodied one of its members, Abu Lulu, who has been implicated in summary executions.

The organization distributed recordings revealing the militiaman's arrest subsequent to identification that he was behind the execution of several non-combatants in the vicinity of el-Fasher.

Social media platform has verified that it has banned the channel linked to Lulu. Uncertainty exists whether he had controlled the profile in his identity.

Sudan was entered a domestic fighting in April 2023 after a intense contest for control broke out between its military and the RSF.

It has caused a starvation emergency and allegations of mass killing in the Darfur area.

More than 150,000 people have died in the fighting around the country, and about 12 million have left their dwellings in what the UN has described as the biggest global humanitarian crisis.

The capture of el-Fasher strengthens the geographic split in the country, with the Rapid Support Forces now in dominance of Sudan's west and a large portion of neighbouring Kordofan to the south, and the army holding the main city, Khartoum, central and eastern areas along the coastal region.

The competing factions had been allies - gaining control together in a takeover in 2021 - but fell out over an foreign-endorsed proposal to transition to civilian leadership.
