Antony Price, Celebrated for Styling Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer who crafted many legendary styles favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.
Price was best known for his defined forms and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the pastel suits that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's seminal music video for "Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."
This news arrives less than a month after he debuted his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress inspired by the notorious black velvet "revenge dress" made famous by Princess Diana.
A Lasting Legacy
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price moved to London in the early 1960s to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he started his work in men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger wore during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.
He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price specifically designed for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A frequent collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in designing sculptural silhouettes established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he started creating outfits for Camilla, now Queen Consort, such as various looks for her tour of the United States after assuming the title.
Following a profession lasting over fifty years, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London just last month in conjunction with the label 16Arlington.
- Sculpted Silhouettes: A hallmark of his work.
- Dramatic Impact: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
- Gender-Fluid Fashion: Merging menswear with womenswear.
- A Client List from Rock to Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.
Design circles laments the passing to a genuine innovator whose legacy on the visual landscape of music remains profoundly felt.
